WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Robin Kelly issued the following statement today in response to the shutdown of the federal government:
“Today, due to the irresponsible tactics of House Republicans, the federal government has shut down for the first time in 17 years. Let’s be clear: This shutdown is not about the Affordable Care Act. It’s about a faction of the Republican Party putting their extremist ideology ahead of the best interests of the American people,” Rep. Kelly said.

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] –U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s (DOC) Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded $2,000,000 in Economic Development District Planning funding to the Village of Glenwood, Illinois to create jobs and aide the construction of critical infrastructure. The project is expected to create 60 local jobs and leverage $3 million in private investment for the area.

CHICAGO, IL– U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly will host a job fair on Friday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Suburban College, 15800 State St., South Holland.
A wide-range of employers with available job openings will be on hand to meet job-seekers. Participating employers represent a variety of industries, including banking, healthcare, retail, insurance, government, transportation, and more. In addition, representatives from South Suburban College will be there to inform the public about continuing education programs.

CHICAGO, IL– Congresswoman Robin Kelly today donated nearly 80 books to Douglas Taylor Elementary School on Chicago’s South Side as part of the Library of Congress Surplus Book Program.

“Reading is a learning tool, but it’s also fun. A good book can expose you to people and places and ideas that open your mind, stir your imagination, and touch your heart,” said Congresswoman Kelly, who visited two classrooms at the school.

MATTESON, IL– Congresswoman Robin Kelly provided constituents with valuable information on the Affordable Care Act during a Town Hall meeting Thursday at the Mary Magdalene M.B. Church in Chicago. Experts explained the new federal health care law and how it benefits individuals and families. Participants also learned about the Illinois Marketplace and what the ACA means for small businesses.
“The purpose of this informational forum and others I’m hosting is to familiarize people with the ABCs of the Affordable Care Act,” Congresswoman Kelly said.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly successfully voted today to protect more than 2 million Illinois residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from a proposed $20 billion in cuts to the program, the nation’s most important anti-hunger initiative. The cuts were included in H.R. 1947, the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013, or Farm Bill.

“I am extremely disappointed that the Illinois House passed this bill. Overriding Chicago’s assault weapons ban and other local gun laws is irresponsible and dangerous and leaves cities defenseless in their fight against gun violence,” Rep. Kelly said. “I urge the Illinois Senate to vote this bill down.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) voted today to keep college within reach for Illinois students by voting against the so-called Smarter Solutions for Students Act that would force students into loans with skyrocketing interest rates. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would charge students and their families $3.7 billion in additional interest payments over the next decade.
