Congresswoman Kelly Announces Grants for Arts Programs

Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that Governors State University and the South Chicago Art Center each received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

"One grant will expand arts programs for schoolchildren on Chicago's South Side. The other will bring some of the world's greatest dancers and choreographers to the south suburbs," Kelly said. "I support the arts because they bring beauty into our lives and strengthen our ties as people."

CHICAGO – Congresswoman Robin Kelly was recently elected as a Regional Deputy Whip for the upcoming 114th Congress.

Kelly will be responsible for working with House Democratic Leadership to build unity among Congressional Democrats. Her duties will include assisting with strategy, vote counting and the gathering and distribution of information from Democratic leadership to members of Congress from Region IV (which includes Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma). Kelly was elected by her colleagues.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly will host a Hiring Event for residents of the 2nd Congressional District on Friday, October 24, from 9 to noon, in the gymnasium of South Suburban College, 15800 State St., South Holland. Last year, more than 60 employers with active job openings met more than 1400 job seekers.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly personally delivered nearly 150 books to Marian Catholic High School as part of the Library of Congress Surplus Book Program.

"Books open young minds to new worlds and possibilities," Congresswoman Kelly said. "A book we donated may be the reason a student chooses a certain career or decides to pursue a new interest. It's also gratifying to interact with the students because they're always curious about careers in public service—which I try to encourage."

Congresswoman Robin Kelly will host a series of four Job Search Boot Camps to teach job-seekers interview skills, how to prepare a resume, and strategies to successfully navigate hiring events. The free, one-hour workshops will help prepare job-seekers for Rep. Kelly's 2nd annual Hiring Event on Friday, October 24, from 9 to noon, in the gymnasium of South Suburban College, 15800 State St., South Holland. Congresswoman Robin Kelly recently sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to use his executive authority to designate the Pullman community in Chicago as a U.S. National Historic Park.

The letter, led by Rep. Kelly and signed by Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Marcia Fudge, Congressman Danny Davis and 19 other CBC members, outlines for the President how Pullman's role in African-American history and in the history of America's labor movement makes the 140-year-old landmark community worthy of national park designation.
