Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that seven South Suburban fire departments were awarded federal grants totaling more than $1.5 million. This federal funding will be used to hire, recruit and improve operations and safety within the departments. The following departments received grants:

Matteson, IL – School superintendents, school board presidents and college presidents from the 2nd Congressional District participated in a series of education forums hosted by Congresswoman Robin Kelly with guest speaker, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), Ranking Member of the House Education and Workforce Committee. The listening session was to hear the ideas and concerns of Chicagoland educators and stakeholders to improve America's schools.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that the Homewood Fire Department was awarded a $58,210 federal grant that will go toward fire station safety improvements and officer training.

"Approximately $52,000 of these funds will be used to update our station's exhaust removal system to ensure the health and well-being of our personnel," said Homewood Fire Chief Bob Grabowski. "The additional $6,000 will be used for fire officer development training."

Chicago, IL – Congresswoman Robin Kelly will participate in the Kelly Klassic, a newly-formed basketball tournament, hosted in Chicago's South Side. The tournament is designed to foster improved community-police relations and address the gun violence epidemic.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly released this statement on the passing of former Congressman and Oakland Mayor, the Honorable Ron V. Dellums:

"Throughout his life, Mayor Dellums stood on the right side of history, no matter the headwinds, risks or snickers from detractors.

I remember him standing strong as he helped found the Congressional Black Caucus and led Congressional efforts to end apartheid in South Africa. At home and abroad, he proved himself to be a giant in yesterday's and today's efforts to end racism and discrimination.
