The United States is the only developed nation where the overall maternal mortality rate is on the rise, and black women are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. In Illinois, the racial disparity is even worse.
Congresswoman Robin Kelly sat down with Reset to talk about the Helping MOMS Act of 2019, a bill she's sponsoring to address maternal health issues.
On why she's pushing to improve maternal health

"Tonight, the President had an opportunity to lay out an agenda for all Americans. While many elements of his speech are deeply disturbing, I hope that we can find ways to work with the White House and Senate to deliver real results for the American people.
As with all things concerning President Trump, the question isn't ‘what he said,' rather ‘is that what he's going to do?' We'll have to wait and see……

Black mothers are dying and it's time to do something about it.
Every year, more than 700 American mothers lose their lives to pregnancy or birth-related complications. Some medical professionals estimate that at least half, if not more, of these deaths are entirely preventable.
