US Rep. Robin Kelly applauds Supreme Court’s decision to uphold law that prohibits domestic abusers from owning guns

June 21, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C.Today, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) applauded the Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision in US v. Rahimi. This decision will continue to prohibit people under domestic violence restraining orders from owning guns.

“The Supreme Court’s decision today rightfully prioritizes the lives of women and children over an abusive partner’s claim to own a gun,” said Congresswoman Kelly, Vice Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. “This is a relieving decision for many, but it was also concerning that the Court’s previous Bruen decision opened the floodgates for this commonsense law to be challenged. The intersection of domestic abuse and gun violence is deadly. A woman is five times more likely to die if her abusive partner has a gun. Gun laws that prevent domestic abusers from having a gun are simply commonsense, and today the Court agreed.”
