Washington, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust and author of the MOMMAs Act, testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Ways & Means Committee.

"As a momma, my heart goes out to those families who have lost their momma," said Congresswoman Kelly. "Starting or growing one's family shouldn't cost a mother of color her life. All mommas deserve a chance to be a momma. Together, we can make sure this is always the case…"

Six months ago, the story of missing Gabby Petito captivated the American media and the public. Within eight days of being reported missing by her family, Gabby Petito’s body was tragically found.

I was devastated to learn that yet another young woman had been allegedly killed by an intimate partner. Gabby’s story stuck with me for another reason.

During those eight days in September, it was impossible to turn on the news without hearing about her case.

WASHINGTON – During Black Maternal Health Week, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) and Lauren Underwood (D-IL-14) today applauded the Biden Administration for approving and signing Illinois' 1115 waiver, which will extend health care coverage for new moms on Medicaid in Illinois from 60 days after pregnancy to a full year.

A House bill introduced Wednesday would expand the amount of time that new moms could remain on Medicaid, in an effort to reduce the number of pregnancy or childbirth-related deaths.

"Too many mothers have died already," said Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., who introduced the legislation. "Too many kids are growing up without a mother. Too many families are living a nightmare that doesn't end."

A new bill has been introduced to Congress by Representative Robin Kelly, D-Illinois to help reverse America's rising maternal mortality rate. Congresswoman Kelly presented the initiative in early May 2018 to help hundreds of women who die each year as a result of pregnancy.

The new initiative is called the Mothers and Offspring Mortality & Morbidity Awareness (MOMMA) Act.

"Hundreds of American mothers are dying. It's time for Congress to do something about It," says Congresswoman Robin Kelly.
