More than 100 residents attended a "Teach-in" Town Hall hosted by Congresswoman Robin Kelly to learn how the recently passed GOP tax bill will directly affect their families and communities.

Residents posed dozens of questions to local tax experts, community stakeholders and elected officials, including Andrew VanSingel of the IRS's Tax Payer Advocate Service and Daniel Kay Hertz of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability. Park Forest Mayor John Ostenburg answered questions regarding how the tax bill would impact communities within the South Suburbs.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly will host a Teach-in Town Hall on the economic dangers and unfairness of the GOP tax bill recently rushed through Congress against the will of the American people. The Town Hall will take place Saturday, January 13, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., in the sanctuary of Victory Apostolic Church, 20801 Matteson Ave., Matteson. The teach-in marks the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by reminding citizens to continue advocating for economic justice and progressive economic policy in America.

Prairie State College in Chicago Heights has been awarded a $938,447 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to create job training centers in welding and machining at various community locations throughout the South Suburbs, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly announced Monday.

The investment will support workforce development efforts throughout the region, which will create jobs and boost manufacturing and logistic sectors locally, the announcement stated.

"Quite simply, this bill will put nearly all government services in your pocket," said Congresswoman Kelly. The legislation mandates that all updated and redesigned federal government websites be mobile-friendly.

A bill to optimize federal websites for mobile devices could soon become law.

The Connected Government Act passed the Senate on Thursday by unanimous consent, and now it heads to the president's desk for possible enactment.

The bill requires that within 180 days agencies design new mobile-friendly websites or update legacy ones to operate better on smartphone and tablet devices. The Office of Management and Budget and the General Services Administration must also report to Congress on the development of the website conversions within 18 months of enactment.
