Rep. Robin Kelly Two Years after Dobbs Decision: ‘Congress must fix the Supreme Court’s Mess’

June 24, 2024

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) released the following statement marking two years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to take away the constitutional right to abortion:

“Two years ago, the Supreme Court delivered a gut punch when it overturned Roe v. Wade and took away the right to choose an abortion. Since then, women’s reproductive rights have been under constant attack and people’s bodily autonomy has been in jeopardy.

Dobbs created a domino effect for healthcare — abortion was just the first to fall. Republican extremists are now eyeing birth control and IVF, further inserting themselves in private family decisions. Forced births have only exacerbated our country’s maternal mortality crisis. Black women, who were already dying at three times the rate of white women during childbirth, continue to be disparagingly impacted.

“Congress must fix the mess that the Supreme Court created. States like Illinois have been a safe haven for women traveling from out of state seeking care. I refuse to stand by and watch as our country regresses and women’s lives hang in the balance.

“We should never be forced to fight for a right as fundamental and private as the decision to choose an abortion. But I promise you — I will continue to fight on until every woman has the access to care she deserves.”
