Today, Congresswoman Robin Kelly voted in favor of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act (H.R. 8). This bipartisan legislation would ensure that a background check is conducted on every gun sale, thus closing loopholes that allow a significant number of guns to be sold without a background check, especially via the Internet and at gun shows.

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly, vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released this statement on the passage of so-called "Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 38):"
"I'm deeply disappointed that my colleagues would support a bill that will dramatically increase the number of Americans taken from their families and communities by gun violence.
The chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus' health task force on Tuesday floated a bill calling for the country's top medical officer to tackle the issue of gun violence.
"Gun violence kills 100 Americans each day in America," Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) said at a news conference on Capitol Hill.
Kelly said Congress needs data in order to confront the epidemic, a need she cited as the impetus for her bill, H.R. 1114, that would require the surgeon general to submit to Congress an annual report on the effects of gun violence on public health.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today introduced a resolution in the Senate establishing June 4, 2021, as "National Gun Violence Awareness Day" and designating June as "National Gun Violence Awareness Month." U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) has introduced a companion resolution in the House.
Today, I went to the House floor – something that I've done hundreds of times over the past four years. But today was different.
Words spoken on the House floor are rarely heard by anyone other than C-SPAN viewers and the handful of representatives who are waiting for their turn to speak. But this speech was different.
Our district is no stranger to the gun violence epidemic. In 2021, 797 lives were claimed by gun violence in Chicago, and 174 in the Second Congressional District. This does not count the many wounded and injured or the communities that are left traumatized. Too many of our families have been affected by senseless gun violence.
Congresswoman Robin Kelly, vice chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released this statement concerning the CDC report that gun violence deaths in 2017 climbed to the highest recorded rate in history:

Thirty-nine thousand seven hundred and seventy-three mothers, brothers, sisters and fathers lost their lives while this Republican-controlled Congress has done nothing to stop the carnage and madness.
