It did on Wednesday for gun control advocates frustrated with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is refusing to call any gun bills until President Donald Trump tells him what he wants done.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that 16 south suburban fire departments will benefit from federal grants totaling nearly $1.4 million.

Fire Departments in Chicago Heights, Steger, Flossmoor, Phoenix and Limestone served as the lead agencies when applying for the funds from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

"Today, it's not uncommon for me to hear from constituents who have to take two buses and a day off of work and find child care just to see a doctor," said U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, whose district includes parts of the South Side of Chicago and Will, Kankakee and Cook counties.

Fire departments in Calumet City, Crete Township, Flossmoor and South Holland will receive a total of $610,000 in federal grants to update firefighter safety equipment and fire station exhaust systems, according to U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Matteson.

Calumet City's department will use its $142,000 grant to update the ventilation systems at its two fire stations to remove toxic vehicle exhaust, according to Kelly's office. The grant also will be used to buy protective gear for firefighters.

"We've already lost too many mothers to this crisis," said U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-2nd District) "It's incumbent upon us to honor their lives with action — action that will prevent another mother from needlessly dying or another family from being torn apart."

To Heidi House, the celebration of her toddler son's birthday Sunday was almost miraculous.

That's because House said she went into cardiac arrest at a downstate hospital when she was in labor two years ago.

While Rueger survived, his twin sister, Emery, died 11 hours after she was born. House said she had to be transferred to a different hospital that had a doctor who specialized in handling her health problems.
