Matteson, IL – Today, the U.S. Senate passed the Action for Dental Health Act, introduced by Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

This bipartisan legislation would target existing federal dollars to organizations that provide oral health service to underserved communities, especially children, seniors and people living in rural and urban communities. Without new funding, this legislation will strengthen the impact of existing resources and services.

Olivia Shorter was diagnosed with sickle cell disease when she was just seven days old and is continuing her fight as she looks forward to her eighth birthday on Sept. 20.

Just as she did to celebrate her 7th birthday, Olivia will host another sickle cell party blood drive for kids like herself and in recognition that September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

The impact of any repeal would be massive and disastrous. Experts estimate that repealing the ACA will kill 43,000 Americans every year.

I believe, as Dr. King did, that health care is a fundamental civil right. As such, my primary charge as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust is to promote, protect, support and defend the basic human right of all Americans to healthy life.

It's 1843 and your son has a fever. It's been getting worse for days and you know he needs help. So, you get on your horse, pull him up and start riding. After miles and miles, you finally reach the only doctor in the county in a desperate attempt to get care for your child. This story would be exactly the same if it were told in 212 B.C., 873, 1564 and even well into the 1900s.

In 2019, too many patients are still forced to do the same thing. This time, instead of a horse, it might be a car or bus, if you're lucky enough to own one or afford the fare.

  • Established the Community Health Center Fund that provides $11 billion over a period of five years for the operation, expansion, and construction of health centers.
  • Included health care workforce initiatives to increase the number of providers available to serve patients nationwide.
