Rep. Kelly Secures $17,534,241 For Local Projects in Final Government Funding Package

December 21, 2022

Today, Representative Robin L. Kelly (IL-02) announced $17,534,241 in Community Project Funding that she previously secured for Illinois’s 2nd District in the House spending bills has been included in the final 2023 appropriations government funding package. This funding responds directly to some of the most pressing needs in the Second District.

“I am proud to have secured $17,534,241 in Community Project Funding in this bill that I know meets long overdue community needs in Illinois’s 2nd District,” Rep. Kelly(IL-02) said. “These investments create jobs with better pay, make us safer, strengthen our communities, and start to tackle climate change. These projects will benefit every part of the Second District and will help our neighbors thrive whether they live in an urban center, a suburban neighborhood, or a rural community.”

Rep. Kelly championed funding for 14 projects that will directly benefit Illinois’s 2nd District residents. These include:

  • $750,000 for the Acquisition and Demolition of Blighted and Vacant buildings in Harvey, IL
  • $4,000,000 for the Cook County, IL U.S. Army Corps projects
  • $353,441 for the Family Christian Health Center, Harvey, IL for equipment and operational costs
  • $626,000 for the Chatham Business Association ‘s Internee-to-Entrepreneur Program
  • $844,800 for the Lake Calumet Trail
  • $1,500,000 for the Pullman Museum Expansion and Community Economic Development Empowerment Project
  • $120,000 for the Orchid Healing Circles for Victims of Gun Violence
  • $1,000,000 for the Prairie State College, Chicago Heights, IL for a dental hygiene program, including enhancements and the installation of equipment
  • $1,000,000 for the Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, IL for facilities and equipment
  • $100,000 for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) After School Programs for Park Forest, Chicago Heights, Ford Heights and Sauk Village
  • $2,000,000 for the South Shore Homeownership Preservation in Chicago, IL
  • $2,000,000 for the South Shore Hospital Corporation, Chicago, IL for facilities and equipment
  • $1,740,000 for the Southland Career and Technical Education Center, Matteson, IL for classroom design and curricula for career and technical education programs
  • $1,500,000 for the Streetlight Improvement for Enhanced Public Safety in Harvey, IL

The twelve-bill government funding package will create good-paying American jobs, grow opportunities for the middle class and small businesses, and provide a lifeline for working families. Taken together, the funding for Illinois’s 2nd District and the funding increases for critical government programs will continue to reverse decades of disinvestment in our communities. Congresswoman Kelly had also requested $550,00 for a third-party design study of Chicago’s Promontory Point in FY23, but this study was funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to resolve issues concerning historic preservation.

After the Senate passes this legislation, we will have the opportunity to vote for the package here in the House. It will then go to President Biden’s desk for his signature. A detailed summary of the bill is available here.
