Rep. Kelly Commends Biden Administration on Historic Actions to Bolster LGBTQ+ Rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) released the following statement applauding President Biden’s announcement of a historic Executive Order advancing equality for LGBTQ+ Americans:

“During Pride Month, we not only celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, but honor those who have fought for LGBTQ+ rights and recommit ourselves to the fight as allies,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly. “Today President Biden will sign an Executive Order to advance equality for LGBTQ+ people across the country. No one should face discrimination because of who they are. We are a nation comprised of diverse individuals and should celebrate and protect that diversity. I thank President Biden for his action today to protect LGBTQ+ Illinoisans and Americans.”

President Biden’s Executive Order builds on the historic progress he has made for LGBTQ+ people by:

• Addressing discriminatory legislative attacks against LGBTQ+ children and families, directing key agencies to protect families and children;
• Preventing so-called “conversion therapy” with a historic initiative to protect children from the harmful practice;
• Safeguarding health care, and programs designed to prevent youth suicide;
• Supporting LGBTQ+ children and families by launching a new initiative to protect foster youth, prevent homelessness, and improve access to federal programs; and
• Taking new, additional steps to advance LGBTQ+ equality, including strengthening support for LGBTQ+ older adults and promoting expanded federal data collection on sexual orientation and gender identity.
