Congresswoman Kelly Hosts Fourth COVID19 Economic Response Call with IL-02 Mayors

April 6, 2020

Matteson, IL – On Friday, Congresswoman Robin Kelly hosted a telephone conference call with more than 30 mayors and local officials from the 2nd Congressional District. This call was the fourth in her series explaining existing COVID19 response legislation and soliciting ideas for additional federal response measures.

"As someone with local and state government experience, I know that municipalities provide the most immediate services to families and know the areas of greatest need," Congresswoman Kelly said. "I also realize that many local communities are struggling in the midst of this crisis to balance basic finances while continuing to provide life-saving services. I wanted to hear from our mayors about what's happening in their communities, what are their immediate needs, and how the federal government can help maintain strong communities during and after this crisis."

During the call, Congresswoman Kelly shared information about the first three COVID19 response bills, connected mayors with regional resources, like the SBA, and solicited ideas for additional measures.

"We're all very grateful for Congresswoman Kelly's support and assuring that mayors are being kept informed," said Richton Park Mayor Rick Reinbold. "It's critical in these very uncertain times to keep those open lines of communication going. We were able to provide Rep. Kelly with our feedback. This one-on-one communication provides us with an opportunity to share our concerns and ideas, and to stay informed of available resources."

On the call, mayors discussed a range of issues impacting their communities. Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard Alsberry expressed his concern that first responders had to travel long distances for COVID19 tests. Other mayors were concerned about depleted revenues, especially sales tax, and requested more funding and greater clarity for municipalities in the next federal stimulus bill.

"Rep. Kelly provided a good briefing on what the federal government is doing, addressed local concerns and asked how she can further support us," Mayor Alsberry said. "I came away with valuable information regarding the federal response and how Congress hopes to further address the needs of municipalities in the next federal stimulus bill."

This call was the fourth in her series of COVID19 response conference calls. Congresswoman Kelly will host calls with faith leaders on Tuesday, April 7, Second District elected officials on Wednesday, April 8, and first responders on Thursday, April 9.
