Congresswoman Kelly Hosts Census Caravan Through Southside

August 19, 2020

Chicago, IL – Today, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, local elected officials and local businesses, hosted a 2020 Census caravan through Southside neighborhoods to encourage residents to complete the Census.

"Right now, Chicago's response rate is less than 50 percent. Statewide, we're down three percent over the 2010 Census. We need to do a lot better reaching into communities and helping them get counted," said Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

The caravan made three stops: Local Market Foods (Jeffrey Plaza), Walgreens (92nd & Commercial) and Jewel Foods (Island Plaza). Census representatives will be at these locations until 5, 6 and 7pm respectively.

"Walgreens is pleased to host Congresswoman Kelly and other civic leaders at our store located at 92nd and Commercial Ave., in Chicago, in support of the effort to get the word out about the importance of the Census and representation. As a healthcare and pharmacy partner to Congresswoman Kelly in her efforts to fight for affordable and accessible healthcare, Walgreens understands the importance of a full and complete count and the impact that has on the disbursement of federal, state and local funding for healthcare services, including prescription medication," added Donovan Pepper, Senior Director, Government Affairs and Civic Engagement, Walgreens.

Numerous elected officials participated, including: State Senators Robert Peters and Elgie Sims, Jr.; State Representative Marcus Evans, Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore, and Chicago Aldermen Leslie Hairston (5th), Susan Garza (10th), and Greg Mitchell (7th).

Photos of the stops are available on the Congresswoman's social media accounts or by contacting James Lewis.
