Rep. Robin Kelly to Vote YES on War Powers Resolution

January 9, 2020

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly, a member of the Oversight National Security subcommittee, released this statement on her intention to vote "Yes" on the War Powers Resolution related to Iran:

"Later today, I will vote "YES" on the War Powers Resolution to restrict President Trump's efforts to start a reckless and unnecessary war with Iran. The decision to put the lives of our brave servicemembers on the line rightfully rests with Congress, per the Constitution. No President should be allowed to start a war unilaterally. The decision to engage in military action requires a whole-of-government commitment. Congress, the White House and Pentagon must work together to achieve strategic goals that increase U.S. national security.

It is clear from yesterday's classified Member briefing that this Administration has no strategy and no achievable goals related to Iran. Instead, we saw an Administration struggle to make sense of illogical actions from the President that has made Americans servicemembers, families, and our allies less safe and secure.

The President has demonstrated rash impulses and proven that he is unable to put U.S. national security before his own personal and political interest. Look no further than his attempt to win a political bribe from the Ukrainian president in exchange for releasing Congressional-approved military aid. Keeping that in mind, it is imperative that Congress reassert its constitutional authority in declaring war.

I firmly believe that putting the lives of our brave men and women in uniform at risk is the most important decision that can be made by Congress, we must have debate, clear intelligence and a coherent strategy. This Administration has offered none. I will vote to restrict the President's power and actions because I will not vote to put American servicemembers or families at risk when there is no clear strategic plan or pressing need."
