House of Representatives passes Kelly Amendment to H.R. 5, the Student Success Act
The House of Representatives approved an amendment offered by Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) to strengthen adult reading and financial literacy programs in communities across the country. Kelly’s Amendment to H.R. 5, the Student Success Act assures that Family Engagement in Education Programs covered under the bill conduct adult and financial literacy in order to engage families and enhance academic outcomes for students.
Upon passage of the amendment and legislation, Congresswoman Robin Kelly released the following statement:
“I am glad that my colleagues were able to recognize the critical importance of adult literacy and financial literacy in creating learning environments that facilitate good beginnings for students.” said Kelly, a Democrat from Matteson.
“Too often, adults are forgotten in the national debate around education. But the fact is that more than 30 million adults in the U.S. struggle with basic literacy and many others lack a basic understanding of banking and finance. This has multi-generational ripple effects as children often turn to parents for academic and financial guidance. Our nation is only as strong as the foundation we build our future on. I believe my amendment strengthens this foundation.”
The Student Success Act is a Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This bill will now move on to the Senate for consideration. Congresswoman Kelly looks forward to a bipartisan improvement to the legislation to effectively reform the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to prepare all children for college and their future careers.
