Congresswoman Kelly's Statement on Rejection of Rule Designed to Keep Guns Out of the Hands of People Who Shouldn't Have Them
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly, vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released this statement following a near Party-line vote to reject a rule that would have kept guns out the hands of people who shouldn’t have them:
“This vote is another step in the wrong direction.
Instead of working to make Americans safer, my Republican colleagues continue to follow the gun lobby’s dangerous playbook.
This rule was carefully designed and crafted to prevent individuals with severe mental illness from easily accessing a firearm. We know that these simple improvements would have helped prevent the tragedies at Virginia Tech and Aurora.
While I remain a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, we need real reforms that keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.
For far too long, the gun lobby has been setting our nation’s policies, not the American people. It’s time for that to change.”
