Congresswoman Kelly Statement on the inclusion of the Kelly Amendment to S. 1177, the Every Student Succeeds Act
Congress recently passed legislation which included an amendment offered by Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) promoting adult literacy and financial literacy in communities across the country. Kelly’s proposal ensured that Family Engagement in Education Programs covered under S. 1177, the Every Student Succeeds Act conduct adult and financial literacy in order to engage families and improve academic outcomes for students.
“I’m proud that my colleagues were able to come together to replace No Child Left Behind, an outdated education law that no longer reflects today’s education needs. With the passage of this crucial bill, our schools will have the data and resources they need to ensure that all students can receive a well-rounded, comprehensive education.
“The passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act isn’t just a win for our youth, but for adults as well. I’m glad that my colleagues recognized the importance of adult literacy and financial literacy by keeping my amendment in the final conference bill. With more than 30 million American adults who have a hard time reading and millions more currently struggling with basic financial literacy, this is an issue that we need to address immediately. My amendment ensures that we don’t forget about adult education in our first comprehensive education bill since 2001.
The Every Student Succeeds Act is a Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The bill passed the House in a 359-64 vote.
