Press Release

Matteson, IL - Today, Congresswoman Robin Kelly donated 137 books to two south suburban elementary schools from the Library of Congress Surplus Book Program.

“Kids love to read. We need to do our part to make it easy for them to pick up a book and learn,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

Rep. Kelly donated the books to a Lincoln Elementary School in Dixmoor and Park Elementary School in Riverdale. Rep. Kelly also read from the book Money Does Grow on Trees to children at each of the schools. Afterward, Chloe McKenzie of BlackFem, Inc., hosted a financial literacy workshop specifically tailored for children in grades kindergarten through second grade.

The schools were selected as part of the Adopt A Classroom Initiative sponsored by BlackFem to promote financial literacy.

“I was especially pleased  we were able to include a financial literacy workshop for these children,” Congresswoman Kelly said. “I truly believe that financial education needs to begin early. I’m grateful to Ms. McKenzie of BlackFem, Inc. for hosting free workshops around the Chicagoland area and for donating a classroom set of the children’s book: Money Does Grow on Trees.”

Since taking office, Congresswoman Kelly has donated more than 2,000 books to schools across the 2nd District, including Douglas Taylor Elementary School on Chicago’s South Side, Creative Communications Academy in Calumet City, Strassburg Elementary School in Sauk Village and Noel LeVasseur Elementary School in Bourbonnais. The book donations have included fairy tales, folklore, biographies, poetry and books on science, animals and dinosaurs.
