Congresswoman Kelly Condemns GRU Attack on OPCW, Calls for Stronger U.S. Action Against Russian Cyberattacks
Matteson, IL – Congresswoman Robin Kelly, ranking member of the IT subcommittee and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, released this statement concerning the revelation of Russian GRU’s hacking attempt against the Organizations for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), part of a trend of Russian cyberattacks against intergovernmental organizations and national institutions:
“Cyberattacks against any intergovernmental organization, let alone the OPCW, is a clear violation of international law and a blatant attempt to undermine global efforts to prevent human rights abuses and eliminate the use of weapons of mass destruction.
It is clear from this attack and others like the 2016 hack of Illinois’ voter database, that Vladimir Putin believes he can act and hack with impunity.
Sadly, he has gone largely unscathed as this Administration has offered no real response to Russia’s continued aggression. They still have taken no real steps to secure the 2018 midterm against Russian interference. After Congress overwhelmingly passed strong sanctions against Russia, the President dragged his feet on imposing them.
Our President, this Congress and global leaders must speak with one voice: ‘Russian cyber assaults must end, otherwise, severe consequences will follow.’ To date, President Trump has been unwilling to make such a clear, bold and necessary statement. The question is, why?”
