Congresswoman Kelly Calls for an End to the Trump Trade War
Congresswoman Robin Kelly released this statement following the release of data from the U.S. Department of Commerce showing the U.S. trade deficit had reached a 10-year high, largely because of President Trump’s failed trade war:
“Despite his repeated claims to address the U.S. trade deficit, President Trump exploded it.
This data clearly shows that the President’s trade wars have failed, miserably. It has been a complete and utter economic disaster; it has resulted in a record trade deficit, American job losses, higher prices for families and significant barriers to our agricultural exports.
This trade war have been a disaster from the outset. In the first two days, Illinois soybean growers and pork producers lost $380 million in market value. It evaporated, nearly overnight, as a direct result of the President’s misguided trade action. Since, we’ve watched as American farmers have lost much of their international market share to agricultural competitors, such as Brazil and Russia.
Once again, I call on President Trump to end his failed Trump Trade War and instead work to open markets for American manufacturers, family farmers and service providers. We’ve already lost too much.
The President told the American people, ‘trade wars are good, and easy to win.’ It’s clear that former Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s comments last week are 100 percent accurate.”
