Congresswoman Kelly Announces GSU Awarded Library of Congress Grant to Enhance Science Curriculum

Aug 15, 2016
Press Release

Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that Governors State University has been awarded a $202,115 federal grant to develop science curriculum for grades K-12 that will incorporate digital primary sources housed with the Library of Congress.

The Library of Congress Teaching and Primary Sources grant will enable GSU faculty, along with a team of K-12 science educators, to develop age-appropriate materials related to global climate and the environment, specifically issues related to weather and weather forecasting, natural disasters, geography and landscapes, conservation, and global warming. The new curriculum will be shared with educators across Illinois and the nation, with a particular focus on rural school educators and elementary education educators.

“I’m especially pleased this grant will help develop science curriculum that will highlight the environment, conservation and global climate,” Congresswoman Kelly said. “The next generation will be dealing with issues related to climate change, so it’s important we provide today’s students with science-based learning tools to fully understand the dynamics of our environment.”

Andrea E. Evans, dean of the College of Education at Governors State University, said, “We believe that Illinois educators and children will benefit from online science curriculum that embeds archival documents, pictures, maps, articles, and other Library of Congress digital primary sources. The vast resources housed at the Library of Congress will strengthen the curriculum that tells the story of global climate and environmental issues.”
