Congresswoman Kelly Addresses Cyber Attacks on American Businesses
Today, U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly released the following statement addressing recent cyber-attacks on American companies including the most recent attack on Anthem Inc., a health insurance plan provider.
“Every day American businesses large and small face a barrage of cyber threats. Whether its criminals beyond our borders profiting from fraud and identity theft, domestic competitors who steal intellectual property to gain advantage, or “hacktivists” looking to make a statement; cybercrime threatens our economic and national security and merits a multi-front strategy to be diminished,” said Kelly a Democrat from Matteson.
“The attacks on American businesses like Target, the Home Depot, and Anthem, Inc. are further proof that cybercriminals remain committed to placing the livelihood of American families, businesses, and workers in jeopardy for personal gain. These attacks are increasing in frequency and sophistication, and the public and private sector must act now to advance cyber infrastructure protection. This involves promoting research and development in cybersecurity, engaging the international community to help developing countries law enforcement combat cyber-crime, and coordinating better sharing of actionable threat information – as in the case of Anthem who self-reported their data breach to the FBI and Congress.”
Congresswoman Kelly serves as the Ranking Member on the House Oversight Committee’s Information Technology Subcommittee which focuses on cybersecurity, intellectual property, IT infrastructure and federal IT procurement.
