Affordable Care Act Toolkit
This Affordable Care Act Toolkit is designed to help you learn about the many benefits of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and how you can take advantage of them. Whether you have insurance or need insurance, if you're a small business or a health care provider, the Affordable Care Act will have benefits for you.
Much of the Affordable Care Act has already taken effect and many Illinois residents have already taken advantage of it. In the 2nd Congressional District of Illinois, 6,500 young adults up to age 26 have been able remain on their parents' health plan. Up to 46,000 children are protected against preexisting conditions exclusions. More than 6,500 seniors in my District have received discounts worth $9.2 million on their prescription drugs since the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
In addition to all of those new benefits and protection, the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace, created by the Affordable Care Act, will open for enrollment on October 1, 2013. If you have insurance through Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, the VA or your employer, you do not need to enroll in the Marketplace. If you purchase your own insurance or are uninsured, the new Marketplace will allow you to compare various coverage options and buy coverage that can begin as early as January 1, 2014. There will be help available for you to sort through plans and pick the one that is right for you and you have until March 31, 2014 to enroll. Depending on your income, if you buy through the Marketplace there will be subsidies available to help you purchase coverage and pay your out-of-pocket expenses.
Unfortunately, there is also a lot of misinformation out there about the Affordable Care Act. So, in addition to giving you information and resources about the health reform law, I've included a "frequently asked questions" to help you sort out the facts from the myths.
If you have additional questions or want more information, please don't hesitate to contact me so my staff and I can get you the answers you need. I will be updating this Toolkit frequently, and your suggestions about what material to add will be helpful in doing that.
